Department of Gynecologic Oncology

Gary H. Johnson Lectureship

Gary Hall Johnson, M.D. attended the University of Utah College of Medicine, graduating in 1964. He served his Residency Training in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of California, Los Angeles (1965-1970).  Upon returning to Salt Lake City (1974), Dr. Johnson was appointed as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and as the head of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology.  In 1981, Dr. Johnson entered private practice at the LDS Medical Center, retaining his position as tenured Professor with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Utah. In 1993, Dr. Johnson assumed the chairmanship of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the LDS Medical Center, a position he held until his retirement in 2002.

Dr. Johnson was widely recognized as an outstanding clinician, a gifted surgeon and a trusted colleague. But perhaps his greatest talent was his ability to teach, as evidence by numerous awards he received for excellence in teaching.  Dr. Johnson was the proud owner of an uncanny sense of humor and was always armed with a joke or a gesture to brighten one’s day. Genuinely loved by his staff and co-workers, Dr. Johnson was both a patient’s doctor and a doctor’s doctor. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Johnson was fortunate enough to spend his last summer as his home in Alaska.

Annually, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology and ACOG sponsor the Gary H. Johnson Memorial Lectureship during ovarian cancer awareness month, in September.
