South Main Women's Health Services Program


A collaboration between the University of Utah and the Salt Lake Valley Health Department caring for underserved women.

The Program

South Main Women's Health Services Program, a component of the nationally designated Center of Excellence in Women's Health, focuses on providing high quality obstetric and gynecologic care, in a culturally sensitive way, to underserved women in Salt Lake County.

The Women's Health Program:

  • Provides over 5000 visits to pregnant of postpartum women annually
  • 3 half days of routing obstetric services, 1 half day of high-risk care and consultation and 2 half days of obstetric ultrasound
  • Delivers over 400 babies annually
  • Now offers gynecologic services (annual examination, pap smears, family planning, STD Screening, colposcopy, etc.)
  • 1000 gynecologic clinics visits each year have been available starting in January 2007. The clinics have been completely booked.
  • Provides medical and nursing students, family practice and obstetrical residents with the opportunity to learn outpatient obstetrics and gynecology and to care for underserved women and their babies.

The Partners

This is a collaboration between the University of Utah and the Salt Lake Valley Health Department currently providing care to women and children. Several groups from the University have banded together to collaborate at South Main Clinic including the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Center of Excellence in Women's Health Demonstration Project), Department of Pediatrics, the Teen Mother and Child Program, and the College of Nursing.

Community-based organizations are involved. There are multiple on-site services including WIC's supplemental nutrition program and Medicaid eligibility offices.
