Ovulation induction
Ovulation induction is primarily utilized for women who do not ovulate regularly. Medications used include gonadotropins, clomiphene citrate or a combination of these and hCG. Extensions of this technique, referred to as superovulation and controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, are utilized in ovulatory women with infertility to increase their chances for pregnancy.
More intense and expensive monitoring is required for superovulation with gonadotropins. These "include" the collection of blood for serum estrogen monitoring as well as serial transvaginal ultrasound examinations of the follicle cyst growth within the ovaries. The risk of over stimulating the ovary and obtaining multiple gestations is substantially higher with gonadotropin superovulation regimens in general.
