Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to a constellation of physical and emotional symptoms that women experience regularly with menstruation. The symptoms usually occur within 7 to 14 days prior to menstruation. The symptoms characteristically worsen before menstruation and subside with or after several days of menstrual bleeding. The symptoms include: nervous tension, mood swings, depression, feeling out of control, water retention, breast tenderness, headache and food cravings. Serotonin agonist antidepressants are the primary treatment for PMS and have proven efficacy. Dietary supplements and regular exercise also help reduce symptoms. Psychological counseling may also enhance the efficacy of medical treatments.
