Endometriosis
Endometriosis is the presence of functioning endometrial glands and stroma that are outside the uterine cavity. It can occur in various places in the pelvic or at distant sites: vagina, cervix, abdominal wall, arms, legs, pleura, lung, diaphragm, kidneys, spleen, gallbladder, nasal mucous membranes, spinal canal, stomach, and breast.
Endometriosis is often associated with pelvic pain and infertility but can be asymptomatic. It is a frequently encountered gynecologic disorder. The cause of endometriosis is unclear. Many treatments are available depending on the individual goal of therapy: correction of infertility or control of pain and progression of the disease. Reproductive endocrinologists are experts in the management of this disorder.
