The University of Utah Health Sciences Center made the transition from a two to four-year curriculum in 1942, with graduation of the first M.D. class in 1944. Over the ensuing years, several distinguished chairmen have led the department.

Dr. C. Matthew Peterson was appointed March 1st, 2006, as the 8th permanent chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Utah Health Sciences.
