Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Dyspareunia

Dyspareunia (dis-pa-roon-ia) is defined as pain during intercourse. Pain during intercourse can be caused by a number of conditions. Examples include endometriosis, ovarian enlargement, congenital or acquired anatomic abnormalities of the reproductive tract, vulvar vestibulitis, an allergic reaction to a personal hygiene product, hormonal changes related to aging.

Sometimes, emotional issues may also play a role. Your reproductive endocrinologist will obtain a history of your pain and then perform a physical examination in order to determine the cause and suggest treatment options.
