Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer

About Our Run

The Ovarian Cancer Education, Awareness and Research Fund was created to increase awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors for ovarian cancer as well as other gynecologic cancers (uterine, cervix, vulvar, vaginal and fallopian tube).  The goals are to educate and improve the care of women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers and focus on innovative research in this field.

Susan Sandoval was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in May 2005 and died May 2007, at the age of 53.  She worked as a nurse at LDS and Primary Children’s hospitals for 21 years.  She had many friends, talked passionately about patient care and rights, and had incredible strength within her to always look at the positive in life and make the best of every day.

In 2007, our 1st annual, the Department of OB/GYN hosted the inaugural Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer. This event raised over $13,000 and had over 400 runners and walkers.

The 2nd annual event in 2008,  and with the help of our sponsors, raised an additional $10,000 and had 300 runners and walkers.  The race was held on September 13th, 2008 at Sugarhouse Park, and was once again, a huge success.

The 3rd annual Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer on September 19th, 2009 at Sugarhouse Park, was incredible. There were over 500 participants, and the group raised $20,000 between race registrations and donations.  The race completed a three day series of events to include a 1/2 day lectured symposium at Huntsman Cancer Institute focusing on gynecologic cancers, the A. Marsh Poulson, MD. memorial lectureship and finishing up with the race on Saturday.

The 4th annual Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer on September 11th, 2010 at Sugarhouse Park, was record breaking. We welcomed 529 participants, and raised $13,000 between race registrations and donations.  Once again, the race completed a three day series of events to include a 1/2 day lectured symposium at Huntsman Cancer Institute focusing on gynecologic cancers, the A. Marsh Poulson, MD. memorial lectureship and finishing up with the extremely well attended race on Saturday.

The 5th annual "Run for her life: Run for Ovarian Cancer" on September 10th, 2011 at Sugarhouse Park, was our best year yet. We had over 600 participants and raised over $24,000 between race registrations and donations.

The 6th annual "Run for her Life: Run for Ovarian Cancer" on September 8, 2012 was phenomenal!  We had over 725 participants and raised over $27,000 between race registraitons and donations.

Our success would not have been possible without the help, support and commitment from all of our sponsors and volunteers.  Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the day.  It was truly an extraordinary event and we appreciate everyone involved in making it happen.  A special thanks to the Sandoval family.

This year will be the 7th annual "RUN FOR HER LIFE: Run for Ovarian Cancer", and will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Sugarhouse Park.  We look forward to seeing all the familiar faces and new participants committed to education, awareness and working toward finding a cure for all gynecologic cancers.  Register online as an individual or a team with our secure registration page, https://secure.uuhsc.utah.edu/ssrun/registration/,  or contact Renee Chase (801) 585-0067, renee.chase@hsc.utah.edu for more information.
