Research Description:
Our research focuses on understanding the development of colon cancer and exploring opportunities for preventing and treating this disease. Our approach centers around defining signaling pathways that control the development and differentiation of colon epithelial cells. Identification of key dis-regulated pathways leading to colon tumor development creates opportunities to development new therapies. To approach this, we rely on the technologies offered by the disciplines of genomics and bioinformatics like, microarray analysis. Specific areas of interest include the role of DNA methylation and gene silencing in colon epithelial cell function as well as the role of retinoic acid signaling in colon cells. Our work is highly translational and we work closely with a number of clinical collaborators in our effort examine pathway defects and test new therapeutic strategies in cancer patients.
