A Multidisciplinary Approach

The Sarcoma fellowship provides extensive and intensive exposure to tertiary/quaternary sarcoma surgery. The clinical experience includes the management of the complete array of benign and malignant musculoskeletal neoplastic and pseudoneoplastic conditions. Soft-tissue and bone sarcomas are managed primarily by our service. Pediatric and adult exposure is very broad. Basic, translational and clinical research opportunities are readily available.

Duration: One year (August 1–July 31)
Director: Kevin B. Jones, MD

Sarcoma Fellows

Clinical Experience

The service treats patients of all ages and all anatomic locations afflicted with mesenchymal neoplasia. A multidisciplinary approach is embraced. The Fellows work primarily with the two Orthopaedic Sarcoma Surgeons but have opportunities to scrub with other surgical disciplines as relates to the diseases we see and treat.

Our sarcoma tumor board was the first disease specific tumor board at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Hospital and is well attended and engaged by many service lines. The Fellows help to lead the weekly tumor board and are proactive in designing treatment plans under the mentorship of the attendings.

Research

Clinical research opportunities abound and at least one peer-reviewed manuscript in submission is an expectation for graduation. Additionally, the Fellows are afforded exposure to mechanistic and preclinical research. Furthermore the Fellows are also engaged with ongoing Sarcoma Disease Oriented Research Team activities including our monthly research meetings and relevant journal clubs. Attendance at one national tumor meeting is supported per year.
