Thomas F. Higgins, M.D. joined the Department of Orthopaedics as an orthopaedic traumatologist on September, 2000. He has post-graduate fellowship training and experience in both the acute and delayed management of the full spectrum of high-energy musculoskeletal injuries.
Dr. Higgins received his undergraduate degree from Williams College, and his medical degree from Brown University, completed his Orthopaedic residency training at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and pursued further sub-specialization with a fellowship in Orthopaedic trauma surgery at the ShockTrauma Center in Baltimore.
Dr. Higgins' acute fracture practice includes the acute management of intra-articular fractures on a primary or referral basis, as well as pelvic and acetabulum fractures. He also treats operative pediatric pelvic and acetabular fractures at Primary Children’s Medical Center.
His elective practice focuses on difficult fracture problems such as fracture malunions and non-unions, as well as deformity correction. Dr. Higgins is active nationally in the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and AO. He sits on the OTA Education Committee and recently chaired and AO Residents Principles course. His research interests clinical evaluations in trauma surgery and laboratory evaluation of the role of IGF-1 on cartilage repair after fracture.
