Sports Medicine Service

The University of Utah Department of Orthopaedics Sports Medicine service includes three orthopaedic surgeons; Robert Burks, Patrick Greis, Stephen Aoki and two non-operative physicians, David Petron who is sports medicine fellowship-trained from family practice and Amy Powell who is sports medicine fellowship-trained from internal medicine. Dr. Stuart Willick from PM&R is also part of the Sports Medicine Team. The sports service also has two fellows associated with it per year.
The sports service takes care of all the University of Utah athletic teams. The service is also active covering events that are held in the Huntsman Center such as NCAA Regional events and also sometimes national events, such as at the Delta Center downtown when gymnastics nationals occur. This service is busy clinically; therefore research focuses have revolved around the types of patients seen in the sports medicine service. Some of the research projects have been basic science, such as osteochondral autografts in sheep and tendon bone healing in dogs. We have also done clinical studies on patients evaluating outcomes of clinical care such as meniscal transplant surgery and ACL surgery. The sports service, headed by Dr. Burks, is responsible for the annual Metcalf Arthroscopy Seminar which is the longest running and largest attended private arthroscopic meeting in the United States.
