Residency

The University of Utah and Affiliated Hospitals provide a five-year clinical internship and residency training program in Orthopaedic surgery designed to enable the Orthopaedic resident to become competent in the field of Orthopaedics. The underlying philosophy holds that the main purpose for the residency program is education of the resident. Each resident is selected because he or she has demonstrated outstanding promise in medicine, and therefore, justifies a five-year commitment of the facilities at the University of Utah and its affiliated hospitals and the time of the educators.

One unique advantage of this program is that all six training facilities are located within the confines of Salt Lake City. These facilities include the University of Utah Medical Center, Primary Children's Medical Center, Shriner's Hospital for Children, LDS Hospital, and the Veteran Affairs Medical Center. This constellation of hospitals provides a well-balanced exposure to both community and tertiary Orthopaedic surgery.

Our residency program offers a full educational experience leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Residents are given a broad exposure to outpatient clinics, the operating room, and the emergency department. There is a busy clinical conference schedule, and an organized basic science and pathology program. Residents are required to participate in a clinical or basic science research project. Responsibility is given in accordance with the resident's ability to assume it. Supervision is always provided, but on an individual graduated basis.
