Message from Residency Program Director
Welcome to the University of Utah Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. Our program provides a five-year clinical internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery designed to enable the graduate to be outstanding in the fundamentals of the field and well prepared for a lifetime of learning. Our philosophy is that the main purpose for the department is education of residents. Each resident is selected because they have demonstrated outstanding promise in medicine, and, therefore, justifies a five-year commitment of the facilities and faculty at the University of Utah.
All training facilities are located within the confines of Salt Lake City and a short distance from each other. These facilities include the University of Utah Medical Center, Primary Children's Medical Center, The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital, the Veteran Affairs Medical Center and Shriners Hospital for Children. This constellation of facilities, our 32 full-time clinical faculty, 18 adjunct clinical faculty and 5 research PhD faculty provide a well-balanced exposure to all aspects of orthopaedic surgery.
Our residency program offers a full educational experience leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Residents are given a broad exposure to outpatient clinics, the operating room and the emergency department. Clinical responsibility is given in accordance with the resident's ability to assume it. Supervision is always provided, but on an individual and graduated basis. Our formal didactic curriculum presents all aspects of orthopaedic surgery to the resident. Residents are required to complete an approved clinical or basic science research project prior to graduation.
As a department, we are proud of our long tradition of resident education. We believe that the close relationship that the residents and faculty enjoy enhances the education of both groups. I encourage you to talk with the current residents about their experiences here and spend clinical time with us if you are able to see why we are so proud of our program.
Sincerely yours,
Alan K. Stotts, M.D.
