Kyla Ost, of the Round lab, was awarded a Helen Hay Whitney fellowship. This highly competitive postdoctoral fellowship provides 3 years of support for early-career scientists engaged in biomedical research. Kyla’s research focuses on commensal fungi in the intestinal microbiome and she will be using this fellowship to explore a particularly interesting yeast prion, named [GAR+], that regulates metabolic interactions with bacteria. Commensal yeast species dominate the intestinal fungal community and some of the most prominent members of this community harbor this bacteria-inducible prion. Kyla will be utilizing a collection of wild Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains and mouse models to define the function of this prion in shaping the intestinal microbiome and immune environment.
