For Referring Physicians
If you have a patient you would like to refer to the University of Utah Division of Pediatric Neurology, please contact our office at 801-662-5696. Fax medical referrals to 801-587-7539.
Please have the child's name and date of birth, a contact number for the family, and symptoms or a diagnosis you would like evaluated.
In most cases the first available physician in our group would be appropriate. At that point, if necessary, we can then refer a patient to a subspecialist within our group. If a patient has already had a previous neurological evaluation and referral to one of our subspecialists is indicated (for example, a leukodystrophy is found on MRI), please indicate this to the scheduler. The scheduler will contact the respective specialist in order to set up the appointment.
Special Cases:
Fast-Track Clinic: For new onset seizures or seizure-like events, or if a child has a history of seizures but has not been seen in our clinic for 3 or more years, please ask our schedulers to place the patient to be seen in the Fast-Track Clinic. Patients scheduled in the Fast-Track are typically seen within 3 working days.
Urgent Care Clinic:
We will strive to place all new patients with concerning problems (or problems of grave concern to parents) that are not seizures in our "Urgent Care Clinics." This will accommodate most patients with headaches, young children with developmental delay, tic disorders etc... However, if you believe your patient requires urgent consultation, but not an Emergency Room visit, it will be necessary to discuss such a patient with the on-call Neurology resident (see below).
Urgent Calls:
If a patient has an urgent neurological issue, potentially requiring the admission to the hospital, or an urgent visit not met by our routine scheduling, please call the hospital operator (801-662-1000) and ask to speak to the on-call neurology resident or attending. Your call should be answered within a few minutes (the resident may be answering another call or in a patient's room).
The resident will take your call; discuss the patient with the attending; and return your call in a timely fashion. Together with the attending, arrangements will be made to address your patient's needs in the optimal fashion.
