Children will be evaluated by our Physician Assistants and the attending physician. Evaluation, testing, and if indicated a treatment plan will be formulated. Follow-up if needed will be arranged, often with our physician assistants. Children are typically seen within 3 working days. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Clinic
The SMA clinic is involved in the diagnosis and care of children with SMA. Following diagnosis in children with milder forms of SMA, we take an active approach to work closely with parents in order to anticipate problems and pursue management aggressively to optimize outcomes. Because of the tremendous variability in severity of muscle weakness, an individualized approach is often necessary. Treatment for the intermediate or milder forms of SMA is focused on preserving mobility and minimizing respiratory complications, particularly restrictive pulmonary disease or respiratory compromise due to progressive scoliosis. Specific interventions are often pursued to optimize the individual's health and helping to maintain motor function.
