Pamela Hansen Residency Director Message

Thank you for your interest in the PM&R Residency Training Program at the University of Utah. 

I absolutely love being the Residency Program Director for the University of Utah PM&R Program. My personal journey in PM&R has been a wonderful ride and I am excited for you and your journey! I was introduced to the field during my time at Northwestern Medical School where I had several rotations at the RIC (now Shirley-Ryan) and fell in love. I did my residency training at the University of Washington where I served as Chief Resident my senior year. I completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2004 at the University of Utah where I have remained.  Life in Utah has proven to be an incredible experience, both in terms of work at the University as well as my personal life.  I love living in such an amazing location surrounded by beautiful mountain trails and in a community that is warm and inviting to all.

I became the PM&R Residency Training Program Director in 2009 and have had the opportunity to mentor 71 residents during their journey through residency which has been a huge opportunity in learning and growth for me. Working with so many brilliant young minds challenges me every day and has allowed me to see life through a different lens. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and for each one of the residents I have mentored.

Our training program is second to none with amazing teaching faculty. We are located in a brand new state-of-the-art hospital, the Neilson Rehabilitation Hospital, which has private smart rooms for every patient allowing maximum independence and function. Our residency training program was founded over a half century ago, so we are both well-established within our hospital system, yet very dynamic in our ability to change and grow quickly as new needs arise. The program is dedicated to training highly qualified, caring clinicians, as well as future leaders in the field of PM&R.  Close faculty and resident interactions and a supportive learning environment promote the development of confidence, autonomy and compassion in the resident physician. Graduates of the program are well prepared for board certification, matching in competitive fellowships as well as any clinical setting.
