Adult Residency
We are very pleased that you are considering application to our program. Since 1948, our Department has been a beacon of hope and refuge for the mentally ill and their families. We are proud of our role in training generations of psychiatrists and we feel we can offer our residents an outstanding array of teachers, settings and experiences. Our graduates begin their post-residency careers well-versed in the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of psychiatric patients. Residents also develop academic skills that culminate in a Department Grand Rounds presentation prior to graduation. Many of our residents participate as co-authors in research electives in psychopharmacology, neuroimaging or other areas.
We hope that you have the opportunity to visit our Department. You will find an outstanding training facility located in a geographic setting considered to be one of the finest in the United States.
Residents connect with each other in a variety of ways.
- Noon meetings on Wednesdays, monthly resident training committee. Movie and book clubs, backyard barbecues in the summer, skiing in the winter.
- Every year there is a faculty/resident ski day scheduled at one of our top local resorts.
- Also, PGY2 residents are invited to a retreat in a picturesque mountain landscape setting. This is an opportunity for residents to get to know each other in a relaxed environment.
- T-group is a professionally led process group for residents. While not mandatory, this time is protected from other duties.
- Individual demonstration psychotherapy – The University of Utah adult residency program offers an opportunity to experience psychotherapy from the patient perspective. Volunteer therapists from the community give their time for you to explore your own goals and personal development.
