Top 12 Reasons to Train at the U of U

- The Residents: Our program has gone from filling the spots each year, to turning away some applicants, to filling with "Blue Chip" applicants.
- The Clinical Rotations: Compare our sixteen diverse clinical rotations with any program in the country. For example, with preschool children, we offer several different rotations with toddlers from different diagnostic categories.
- The Teachers: Our faculty actually like each other! Surprise---you won't find this to be true at all universities. We support each other and work well together---this leads to a parallel process of supporting the residents.
- The Facilities: The University Neuropsychiatric Institute is a great place to work, so is the Primary Children's Medical Center, The Children's Center, the Odyssey House, the Utah State Hospital, ARTEC, Pingree School, Jordon School District, the Neurobehavioral Clinic, and the University Specialty Clinic. We have wonderful facilities.
- The RRC agrees: The Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the ACGME reviews residency programs nationally for the ACGME. Programs can receive one to five years' accreditation, or probation. Our program received the maximum, five years, and the experienced site visitor stated, "This is the first program I have ever visited where there was not a single resident complaint!"
- You will become an expert! Our residents are given research time. While we don't expect a research project from each resident, we do expect each resident to become an expert in some area of child psychiatry, and to conclude their training with a Grand Rounds presentation. Residents often take this presentation on the road for job interviews.
- Education vs. Service: We have eliminated all of the call for our residents, except for 2-3 weeks of telephone call during the first year Inpatient rotation (Backed up by an attending). We treat our residents like junior colleagues, and the workload leaves time for reading.
- The Triple Board Program: We have one of the top Triple Board Programs in the US---they become board eligible in General and Child Psychiatry, as well as Pediatrics. Our TB residents are outstanding, and seniors from both programs work side by side in the Specialty Clinic. Many become board certified in Pediatrics as senior residents, and are a great resource to the clinic.
- Passing your Board Exams: Monthly, you will observe a mock board exam of an adult patient by a resident, supervised by our Chairman, Dr. Grosser (ABPN Examiner). In addition, we offer you a mock board exam with an adolescent every six months. We have an organized study group for the written board exam. You will be prepared!
- The Training Director: My career goal was to become a Training Director. It is my top focus---I have turned down research and clinical opportunities to stay focused on our residents. As part of our program, you will be my top priority.
- Therapy: Every rotation begins with identification of the best psychotherapy supervisors, and a plan for training in psychodynamic, cognitive, family and group therapy.
- Supervision: Academic journals indicate that individual supervision is the most valued component of training. We offer 150-300% more individual supervision time than required.
