Child Psychiatry

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a unique discipline of medicine devoted to the mental health of youth and families. This discipline integrates biological, psychological, and social perspectives into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cognitive, emotional, or behavioral disorders that begin during the developmental period. The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah is dedicated to nurturing the mental health of young people by combining the methods of medical and social sciences with the heartfelt respect for the healing power of caring relationships.

The mission of the Division is to develop and disseminate expertise for Utah and the nation by:

1. Administering and providing exemplary psychiatric and medical care for pediatric patients and their families, as well as for adult patients with developmental disabilities.
2. Teaching principles and practice of child and adolescent psychiatry to medical students, residents, fellows, practicing physicians, and allied mental health trainees and professionals.
3. Advancing the discipline of child and adolescent psychiatry through research, scholarly activities, advocacy, and public education.
4. Cultivating a network of working relationships within the School of Medicine, University, State of Utah, and larger community of individuals and institutions dedicated to the well being of children, adolescents, and families.

Providing an institutional identity and spiritual home for faculty focused on teaching, research, and service for the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.
