About Salt Lake City

Take a psychiatry residency program with a rich history and a bright future, then surround it with a campus full of amenities, a progressive city with tremendous warmth, and a state with endless possibilities for recreation, and you will begin to understand why the University of Utah Psychiatry Residency Training Program is considered by many to provide the perfect balance between work, home, and fun.

The University of Utah campus is easily accessed from anywhere within the Salt Lake valley and is attractively located at the base of the majestic Wasatch Mountains. Within minutes of the Health Science campus you will find rugged hiking and biking trails, a nine hole par three golf course, and a variety of sports and fitness opportunities.

Despite the notoriety that came with hosting the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, Salt Lake City remains a hidden gem due to its low crime rates, its down-to-earth atmosphere, and its cultural and artistic diversity. Shopping centers, brew pubs, and ethnic restaurants lend an increasingly cosmopolitan touch, but outdoor recreation is perhaps a greater draw for visitors and natives alike. The city’s namesake, the Great Salt Lake, lies just to the west. Seven canyons snake up into the mountains from the city’s edges and many state and national parks, rivers, forests and recreation areas are within an easy day’s drive.

Utah is a state with great history and heritage, yet there is much on the horizon as well. Many Utah cities are are home to burgeoning industries and the nation's top companies, but just beyond the bustle of business you will find quiet red-rock canyons, crystal clear streams and lakes, and high arching ski slopes. It would be quite a challenge to take in all that Utah has to offer in the course of a four year residency, but it's well worth the try!
