Psychiatry Fellowship

Training Sites

Our Addiction Psychiatry program is primarily based at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) and the VA Medical Center (VAMC), with rotations at the University of Utah Hospital.

University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI)

UNI

The University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) is a freestanding psychiatric hospital that draws patients from the entire Mountain West region. At UNI residents will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of patients, from those with severe and persistent mental illness to those patients who are cared for within a private practice model. In contrast to the other rotation sites, residents may be more exposed at UNI to managed care constraints and expectations, which require different skills and which may influence the resident's relationship with his/her patients.

Rotations at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute include:

  • Inpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Outpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Adolescent consultation service rotation

George E. Wahlen Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC)

UUMC

The George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Medical center (VAMC) is a tertiary care teaching hospital serving Utah and parts of the Mountain West. It is affiliated with the University of Utah School of Medicine. The inpatient psychiatric unit currently has 21 beds, although the unit may be expanding in the near future. Patients at the VAMC are mostly male, and many carry a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. Residents will gain proficiency in treating this illness and its comorbidities, but will also frequently see patients with severe and persistent mental illness as well as patients with substance use disorders. Residents will learn about integrated care within the VA system and learn about numerous innovative treatment options available to veterans.

Rotations at the VA Medical Center include:

  • Inpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Outpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Consultation-liaison rotation

University of Utah Main Hospital

UUMC

The University of Utah Main Hospital serves people from across the state and throughout the Intermountain West. University Hospitals & Clinics log more than 850,000 inpatient and outpatient visits annually, and every day more than 10,000 people pass through the front doors of the University Hospital. Residents rotate on 5 West, a 22 bed psychiatric unit that is part of the University Hospital. Residents on this rotation are exposed to a wide range of psychiatric disorders. A unique aspect of working on 5 West is that residents will have exposure to patients with significant medical and psychiatric co-morbidities. Residents will gain skills in managing patients who require careful medical evaluation and co-management with other medical specialties.

Rotations at the University of Utah Medical Center include:

  • Consultation-liaison rotation
  • Infectious disease outpatient clinic rotation
