Adult Psychiatry Inpatient Rotation SitesRotation Site: University of Utah 5 West
University of Utah 5W: Four out of six months during the adult psychiatry are spent on inpatient units at U of U 5W, UNI, and the VA. The University of Utah Medical Center is a 425 bed tertiary care hospital. University of Utah 5W is a 24 bed secure general psychiatry unit in the hospital. Patients on the unit include those with chronic mental illness and those with psychiatric illness and comorbid medical conditions. Residents work as a member of one of four interdisciplinary treatment teams.
Rotation Site: University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI)
UNI: Four out of six months during the adult psychiatry are spent on inpatient units at U of U 5W, UNI, and the VA. UNI is a 90 bed psychiatry subspecialty hospital affiliated with the University of Utah Health Sciences Center that serves both adult and child inpatient populations. UNI adult inpatient services include open, secure, and geriatric units. UNI serves a wide spectrum of patients with varying severities of illness.
Rotation Site: Salt Lake City VA Medical Center
VA: Four out of six months during the adult psychiatry are spent on inpatient units at U of U 5W, UNI, and the VA. The SLCVAMC is a 121 bed tertiary care hospital serving veterans from the Intermountain West. The inpatient psychiatry unit is a 22 bed secure unit on the VA campus adjoining the main hospital. Residents will see patients with a wide variety of illnesses including PTSD and substance abuse disorders.
Rotation Site: Emergency Psychiatry at University of Utah ER and VA ER
One month of adult psychiatry is spent doing night float five nights a week. This reduces the amount of call that each resident takes during the other adult psychiatry months. Residents take admissions, work with crisis staff at UUMC ER, and do crosscover at the University of Utah and the VA.
Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Sites
Rotation Site: University of Utah Outpatient Clinics, including HIV clinic, psychotherapy clinic at UNI
HIV clinic is an interdisciplinary clinic serving the needs of patients with HIV and AIDS. Patients receive primary care, psychiatric services and case management all in one clinic. Psychiatric residents can be involved in all aspects of the clinic.
Psychotherapy clinic is a resident-run, self-pay clinic providing psychotherapy and medication management for under-insured patients. This provides residents with an opportunity to follow patients over several months to years. Triple Board residents start working in the clinic during their outpatient year, but may continue to follow selected patients for longer periods of time.
Rotation Site: Salt Lake City VA Medical Center
The Salt Lake VA provides several outpatient rotation opportunities for residents. Several groups are run by psychologists and psychiatrists, such as those focusing on PTSD, substance abuse, couples' therapy and women's groups. Residents may choose to facilitate such groups while working closely with the attendings. In addition, one may also chose to see their own patients for medication management and/or psychotherapy with suppervision from one of the several staff psychiatrists and psychologists. Consultation liaison opportunities also exist at the VA in both the inpatient and outpatient clinic settings.
Rotation Site: Valley Mental Health
Valley Mental Health is a community mental health provider serving the mental health care needs of the severely and persistently mentally ill as well as those with Medicaid. Valley Mental Health offers a continuum of care, from outpatient services to residential treatment programs to acute inpatient services. Outpatient services are provided in two locations: North Valley and South Valley Mental Health facilities. Residents rotate through one of the two facilities for two days a week throughout their outpatient adult psychiatry year.
