Child Rotation Sites

Rotation Site: Inpatient - University Neuropsychiatric Institute

This is also a site for Child and Adolescent inpatient psychiatry. It is a full-time rotation for 3 months during the second year of training. Residents have the opportunity to work with a dynamic team of providers in a multi disciplinary setting. The one-unit, 28 - bed psychiatric inpatient service treats children who are severely emotionally and behaviorally disordered. There are also latency and adolescent day treatment units, allowing the resident to follow some patients who are transitioned into day treatment. The average age range of the patients is 4-18 and they come from all socioeconomic groups with referrals from western states including California, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.

Rotation Site: Wasatch Canyons Residential and Day Treatment Program

This is a 3 month full-time rotation in which residents work with a multidisciplinary team and provide supervised assessments, evaluations and treatment plans for a broad range of psychiatric disorders, including substance abuse disorders. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in individual, group and family therapy for both adolescents and latency age children. Since severely disturbed youngsters requiring long-term treatment are served, there are opportunities for residents to observe progress and the need for ongoing collaboration with outside agencies and professionals.

Rotation Site: Consultation Liaison Service - PCMC

This rotation is a half-day per week rotation for 6 months during the fifth year of training. Residents do consults on the med/surg and the intensive care units at PCMC. The resident works closely with a triple board attending who has expertise in both pediatrics and child psychiatry. The resident attends the pediatric noon-time lectures (lunch provided) and attends seminars relevant to C/L issues including monthly Interdisciplinary Case Conferences with pediatric sub specialists, child psychiatrics and triple board attendings.

Rotation Site: Children's Center - Preschool Day Treatment

This rotation is one half day per week for 2 months. The Children's Center is a comprehensive mental health center for preschool children and is the largest program for preschool children in the country. Treatment approach is predominant group therapy with cognitive social skills training. In addition to group therapy, the children's center provides individual and family therapy, psychopharmacological treatment, speech therapy, and a mother-toddler group for ages 18-30 months. A very broad range of developmental, emotional and behavioral disorders are evaluated and treated.

Rotation Site: Autism Rotation @ U of U Specialty Clinic

This rotation is one half day per week for 3 months. The clinic is comprised of infants, preschoolers, children, adolescents and young adults with suspected pervasive developmental disorders and a variety of associated comorbid conditions. Residents work closely with psychologists, psychiatrists, speech and language pathologists and cognitive neuroscientists who specialize in pervasive development disorders.

Rotation Site: Carmen B. Pingree School for Autism Children's Behavior Therapy Unit (CBTU)

This is one half day per week for 3 months. The resident is trained in behavioral modification techniques and educational strategies for preschool children with autism. Tracking, matching, imitation, and compliance are taught to preschoolers. Free play time, gym time and lunch are also good opportunities to teach appropriate development and social skills. The CBTU has met the educational and behavioral needs of preschool aged autistic children for many years and has provided excellent hands on experience for residents.

Rotation Site: Adolescent Resident Treatment Education Center (ARTEC)

This rotation is one half day per week for 6 months. ARTEC provides long term residential care for lower socioeconomic teenagers usually with comorbidity including psychiatric disorders, conduct problems and substance abuse. ARTEC uses a variety of multimodality treatments including milieu, family, individual, group, social skills training, education with computer assisted reading level advancement, victim and perpetrator sexual abuse group therapy and recreational therapy. ARTEC is multi-theoretical in it's' approach utilizing developmental, cognitive, dynamic, biological and family approaches.

Rotation Site: Neurobehavioral Clinic for People with Developmental Disabilities

This rotation is one-half day per week for six months. The clinic serves children with special health care needs, predominantly those with developmental disabilities, mental retardation, neurologic and genetic disorders. It is a lifespan clinic which follows patients from childhood through late adulthood. Behavioral management, school consultations, case management, psychopharmacological treatment and individual therapy are the most common forms of intervention. This clinic is unique and provides one of the few services in the country designed to meet the medical and psychiatric needs of this complex population.

Rotation Site: Adolescent Substance Abuse-Odyssey House

This rotation is one day per week for 3 months. Odyssey House is a residential treatment program for adolescents and adults with substance abuse and other problems. A therapeutic community model is used. Comorbid diagnoses include conduct disorders, delinquency (number of patients have gang affiliation), ADHD, affective disorders and physical and sexual abuse. Many are referred by juvenile court. There is a therapeutic school integral to the program. Treatment modalities include a variety of group therapies (survivors group, life skills, relapse prevention, gender groups). The residents act as co-therapists for patient group therapy.

Rotation Site: Specialty Clinic

The mission of the Specialty Clinic is to provide state of the art psychiatric care for children, adolescents, and young adults (18-24 years). This care includes psychiatric consultation or evaluation and follow up. Our clinicians have expertise in prescribing psychiatric medications, and provide a limited amount of psychotherapy. All of our clinicians are professors at the University of Utah, or Senior residents who are finishing their last year of training in child psychiatry. Our professors lecture locally, regionally, and nationally on topics related to psychatric disorders in children. Our senior residents help train junior residents and medical students.
