Applying
Radiation Oncology residents are selected through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) for entry at PGY-2. All applications to the program should be made using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We begin screening applications in early October and ask that you complete the submission of your application no later than November 1st. The program requires the following documentation for application:
- ERAS Application
- Curriculum Vitae and Personal Statement
- USMLE Scores, Steps 1 and 2 (when available). Step 3 to be performed during PGY-1 year and available at the beginning of the PGY-2 residency.
- Dean's Letter
- Medical School Transcripts
- 3-4 Letters of Recommendation
- NRMP match number
M.D. Applicants (applicants who have already graduated from medical school) must include the following items in addition to the above:
- Letter from current program director (if applicable)
- Notarized proof of graduation from medical school with date of graduation
International Medical Graduates must include the following in addition to the above:
- Visa (J-1 only), or documentation of U.S. citizenship
- Valid ECFMG certificate with Clinical Skills Assessment certification
- Evidence of previous training in the United States (PGY-1 position)
Our program does not have an affiliated internship, therefore you must arrange for an internship (PGY-1) separately from the residency program. A transitional or medicine internship is typically arranged; however, any accredited internship is acceptable.
Medical students who are particularly interested in our radiation oncology training program are encouraged to participate in a 2-4 week elective rotation in our department. It is a good way for us to distinguish you from the many other qualified applicants. An elective rotation can be arranged through the University of Utah School of Medicine Student Affairs Office.
Interview Process
Prospective candidates are contacted soon after November 1st to arrange for an interview within our department. Interviews are given by invitation only and are scheduled in two to three interview sessions. One to two PGY-2 residency positions are filled annually, and approximately 20-30 applicants are interviewed for these positions. The interviews are held on selected dates between December and January.
The interview day usually begins around 8am with an introduction from the Program Director and a tour of the facilities in the department and throughout the Huntsman Cancer Hospital. Following the tour, interviews with the faculty begin. Each applicant interviews with all faculty members for about 20 minutes each. Immediately after the interviews, applicants are accompanied by the housestaff for an informal lunch where they are encouraged to find out additional information about the program.
Candidates for the program are selected based on their preparedness, ability, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as integrity and motivation.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Utah School of Medicine does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran's status.
