Guidelines for Electives at Other Schools or Hospitals for Senior Credit

  1. All fourth year, full-time students in good standing at the University of Utah medical school may apply for and arrange electives (externships) at other institutions.  Third year students may apply for an externship during their third-year break if they have met any prerequisites for such an externship.
  2. The student is responsible for obtaining information from the medical school or hospital regarding:
    • availability of the elective
    • details of the proposed program; and
    • approval of both institution and the preceptor in charge of the elective to accept the student.
  3. This information should be submitted to the appropriate University of Utah department or division for review and approval. An approval letter from the department or division identifying an equivalent Utah course must be sent to the Office of Student Affairs prior to the time the student leaves for the elective.
  4. The student is responsible for making arrangements for the University of Utah fourth year elective evaluation form to be completed.
