Visiting Student Program
Visiting Student Senior Electives
The University of Utah School of Medicine offers senior electives to students, space permitting, that are in good academic standing. Each approved student must be taking the requested elective for credit, have adequate professional liability insurance coverage, health insurance coverage, all required immunizations, current BLS certification and satisfactorily passed a background check.
Students from LCME or AOA Medical Schools
Students receiving an M.D. degree must come from a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Students receiving a D.O. degree must come from a school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association's Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
NOTE - D.O. students are not accepted into all rotations. It is the responsibility of the D.O. student to ensure that the rotation they request will accept D.O. students.
Students from Foreign/Non-Affiliated Medical Schools
The University of Utah School of Medicine does not accept students who are attending a medical school outside of the United States which does not have a current affiliation agreement. Students attending a medical school outside of the United States are encourage to contact their home school and inquire about the existence of an affiliation agreement between their school and the University of Utah School of Medicine BEFORE requesting a rotation.
Required Clerkships
Students must satisfactorily complete ALL required third-year clerkship rotations (General Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, and OB/Gyn Core Clerkships) prior to attending a fourth-year elective. Exceptions are not permitted. Third-year core clinical rotations are not available to visiting students.
Important Details
Application should be submitted via VSAS. Students coming from a school that does not participate in VSAS may mail a paper application to:
University of Utah School of Medicine
30 North 1900 East, Room 1C101
Salt Lake City, Utah 84132-2101
A limited number of electives may be requested on one application. If a student requests a rotation change after they have been assigned a rotation, the student must cancel their original application and submit a new application. Due to limited space and availability of rotations a change of rotation may not always be possible.
All applications must be received at least 45 days prior to the start of the requested rotation. No application will be considered if received less than four weeks prior to the requested start date.
Visiting students that request and are registered for a course which requires permission to drop and/or advanced notification (noted in the catalog) must recognize their commitment to the elective. Because it is often impossible for a non-University of Utah visiting student to find a replacement, the student is expected to fulfill their commitment when acknowledging and accepting the registration dates.
Applications will be processed as quickly as possible. However, if you do need to consult with us regarding your application, please email us at visiting.student@hsc.utah.edu.
Processing Fee
A non-refundable processing fee will be charged after the student accepts an offer to rotate. The non-refundable processing fee must be received, through our secure e-commerce site, within five business days of accepting the offer to rotate.
Students who do not submit the required non-refundable processing fee within five business days will have their registration cancelled. Students who request a rotation change after they have accepted an offer to rotate will be charged an additional non-refundable processing fee.
Evaluations
At the end of the elective period, it will be the visiting student's responsibility to obtain his/her evaluation of performance/grade from the department faculty. If your medical school requires the evaluation to be on your school's evaluation form, be sure the evaluation form is sent with your application. If needed, you may obtain the University of Utah School of Medicine Evaluation form. If an evaluation from your school is not sent with the application your evaluation will be completed on the University of Utah School of Medicine Evaluation form.
