Guidelines for Electives for Visiting Students

There are no formally sanctioned electives for enrollees at foreign medical schools (approved affiliated Canadian schools are not considered foreign).

Senior Electives

The University of Utah School of Medicine offers senior electives to students that are in good standing and are receiving an M.D.degree in a school which is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

Students receiving a D.O. degree must come from a school accredited by the Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association. D.O. students are not accepted into all rotations, and it is the responsibility of the D.O. student to ensure that the rotation they request will accept application.

Required Clerkships

All elective rotations require satisfactory completion of general internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, family medicine, and OB/Gyn core clerkships, NO exceptions. Core clinical rotations are not available to visiting students.

Applications for the 2008/2009 Academic Year

Applications will be accepted beginning April 2008. Applications received before April 1, 2008 will be returned. A student will be limited to a maximum of 8 weeks of elective time at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Rotations will be scheduled in the order the applications are received.

The actual scheduling process will not take place until May 2008. You will be contacted via email, if the rotation(s) and/or dates you requested are not available. Final approval may be given in mid May. After this time, applications will be accepted throughout the academic year on a first come basis.

The application will be processed by the Office of Student Affairs and forwarded to the appropriate department or division for final review and approval. The department will be responsible for accepting the student for the specific elective at the designated period of time.

Some departments may require further documentation in order to accept a student. The department will request this information from the student upon receipt of the application. The Office of Student Affairs will notify the student of action taken.

Faxed applications are not accepted. Incomplete applications will not be processed and will be returned. Once verified, your application will be forwarded to the appropriate clinical department for approval and scheduling.

Important Details

  • One application must be submitted for each elective requested.
  • A non-refundable $100.00 processing fee per application must be made through our secure credit card site.  Once the payment and the completed application are received the application will be processed. If a student requests a rotation change after they have been assigned a rotation, the student will be charged an additional $100.00 fee for each change.
  • All applications must be received at least 30 days prior to the start of the requested rotation. No application will be considered if received less than four weeks prior to requested start date. Application should be mailed to:
  • Visiting Student Project Coordinator
University of Utah School of Medicine
    30 North 1900 East, Room 1C101
    Salt Lake City, Utah 84132-2101

Students are strongly encouraged to stay within the rotation time periods outlined on the Student Affairs Senior Catalog.

If students from other schools request and are registered for a course that requires permission to drop and/or advanced notification (noted in the catalog), they must recognize their commitment to the elective. Because this is impossible for non University of Utah students to find replacements, they are expected to fulfill their commitment when acknowledging and accepting the registration dates.

Applications will be processed as quickly as possible. However, if you do need to consult with us regarding your application, please email us at visiting.student@hsc.utah.edu.

Evaluations

At the end of the elective period, it will be the Visiting Student's responsibility to obtain his/her evaluation of performance/grade from the department faculty. If your medical school requires you to be evaluated on your schools evaluation form, be sure to either mail the form before your start date or bring it with you. If needed you may obtain the University of Utah School of Medicine Evaluation form. If an evaluation from your school is not in your file at the time of request, your evaluation will be completed on the University of Utah School of Medicine Evaluation form.
