Utah Pediatric Partnership to Improve Healthcare Quality

Evidence-based Pharmacotherapy Review (EbPR) for Asthma Prescribing

Project Overview:

Seven primary care practices along the Wasatch Front participated in an office-based quality improvement project aimed at improving prescribing for asthma medications.  Medicaid claims data was used to identify patients at increased risk for asthma excacerbations or hospitalizations based upon prescription fills, emergency room visits, and steroid bursts.  Providers received detailed summaries of individual asthma patient data and participated in up to 3 in-office educational sessions aimed at providing education on asthma guidelines, assessing current practice patterns related to asthma, and implementing changes in office systems to improve the care provided to asthma patients.
