Dr. Black received his MD degree from the U of U in 1974. He then did an internship and residency in surgery at both the U and Duke, finishing with a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati. He is board certified in both general surgery and pediatric surgery and with the national board of medical examiners.
He has committed his entire surgical career to the U of U, being an active faculty member for 33 years. He is a master technical surgeon who serves as a mentor for medical students, surgical residents and young pediatric surgeons starting in the field. He led the Senior Honors; Program in surgery for many years and directed the Trauma Program at Primary Children’s hospital. He did volunteer work in El Salvador, Belize and Guatemala for four years with the humanitarian group Interplast, teaching plastic surgery techniques to surgeons in those countries.
He belongs to numerous medical and surgical societies and served as president of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons in 2008. He has 26 peer-reviewed papers published in such eminent journals as The New England Journal of Medicine, The American Journal of Surgery and the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. He has lectured around the world and the United States on various topics within his specialty.
Dr. Black is a respected member of the Division of Pediatric Surgery but has also been a proud alum of the SOM Alumni Association, serving in various positions on the SOM Alumni Board and spending his entire career at the U.
