Division of Perioperative Echocardiography

Perioperative Echocardiography at the University of Utah

The Perioperative Echocardiography Service has been an integral part of the University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology since Dr. Cahalan took his position as department chair in 2002. Our team comprises 25 level III fellowship-trained anesthesiology echocardiographers. We currently provide coverage for the:

  • Georges E. Wahlen VA Medical Center Echocardiography Lab: Our echo lab at the VA is the only anesthesiologist-run, anesthesiologist-staffed, full-service echo lab in the country and is staffed daily by two of our faculty.  We interpret over 4000 transthoracic echocardiograms, 600 transesophageal echocardiograms, and 1100 stress echocardiograms each year.
  • University of Utah Perioperative Echocardiography Service: Our echo team provides staffing 5 days a week for the University of Utah Preoperative Assessment Clinic, which allows us the opportunity to provide daily hands-on teaching in perioperative transthoracic echocardiography for our residents.  We also provide 24/7 perioperative echocardiography consultations for preoperative TTE, intraoperative TEE, or echocardiograms in the intensive care units.  This amounts to over 1000 echocardiograms performed and interpreted at the University each year.

We offer a one-of-a-kind fellowship in echocardiography and perioperative ultrasound (more information can be found here.)  In addition, our team has created a unique online resource for both perioperative transesophageal and point of care ultrasound (which can be found here.)
