Title: Director, Cardiothoracic Fellowship
We are excited you are considering training in Utah for your ACGME Accredited Cardiothoracic Fellowship. The University of Utah is a tertiary medical center with a multistate geographic referral base. We have a high-acuity cardiac anesthesia service line and perform the full breadth of anesthesia for cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology. What makes our program special is our dedication to echo education inside and outside the operating room. 12 out of 13 of our cardiac anesthesiologists have completed a dedicated fellowship in echocardiography and work and teach in an anesthesia-directed, full-service echo lab. As a fellow, you will spend one month learning from our echo faculty in this lab. We also run a 24/7/365 echo service and have a dedicated attending for echo service throughout the hospital, and echo education. In addition to our dedication to echo education, we have partnered with our cardiac surgery residency and fellowship to provide in depth education on advanced cardiac surgery topics. Since our staffing model is largely one attending with one fellow and one resident per case, education and flexible case selection are a priority for us.
On a personal note, I can tell you that while I am not originally from Utah, I love living here. Utah has incredible opportunity for exploring the outdoors. Hiking, climbing, mountain biking and skiing are 30 minutes from your doorstep. The attractions in less than 4 hours drive from Salt Lake City include, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Moab, Arches National Park, Jackson Hole, Canyonlands, and countless others. Salt Lake City also boasts all the cultural fare of a midsized city, including lots of outdoor concerts, symphony, opera, ballet, great restaurants and night life.
