After more than 30 years of dedication to the University of Utah and 11 years as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, & Pain Medicine, Talmage D. Egan, MD, is stepping down from his role as chair and transitioning to focus on research.
To honor his extraordinary leadership and lasting contributions to the department, colleagues, family, and friends gathered for a celebration recognizing both his professional achievements and the community he helped build.
The event, emceed by Dr. Harriet Hopf, reflected the deep respect and appreciation felt across the department and beyond. Attendees traveled from near and far to celebrate Dr. Egan’s impact on the University of Utah, his mentorship of faculty and trainees, and his influence on the field of anesthesiology.
Dr. Bob Carter shared remarks highlighting Dr. Egan’s leadership during a period of significant growth for the department and his steady commitment to clinical excellence, academic advancement, and faculty development. A special message was delivered by Dr. Ken Johnson, former faculty member and now Department Chair at ASU, who spoke about Dr. Egan’s mentorship and the lasting impact it had on his own career trajectory.
In a moment that captured the spirit of the evening, Dr. Egan expressed heartfelt gratitude for the colleagues, collaborators, and loved ones who have shaped his journey. His remarks underscored what many in attendance already knew: that his legacy is defined not only by scholarship and innovation, but by relationships.
As part of the celebration, the department formally dedicated the newly named Talmage D. Egan, MD, and Julie C. Egan Conference Room, a space that showcases just a glimpse of the Egan family's many contributions to anesthesiology and to the University. The dedication serves as a lasting tribute to his leadership and vision.
The evening also included thoughtful and personal touches that reflected Dr. Egan’s interests and personality. Guests enjoyed Japanese-themed treats—including cupcakes styled like miniature ramen bowls—alongside Japanese candy and his favorite, black licorice. A commemorative photo book featuring historical images from his career was created for attendees to sign, capturing memories and messages of appreciation.
In a nod to his well-known love of karaoke, the department joined together to gift Dr. Egan a custom “Egan Karaoke” neon sign for his basement—a celebration of both his leadership and his enthusiasm for bringing people together outside the clinical setting.
The event was beautifully coordinated by Jenalynn Sampson, Annalyse Erickson, Chris Haber, Darcie Black, Madge Witt, and Dylan Lowe, whose thoughtful planning created an evening filled with reflection, gratitude, and joy!
While Dr. Egan transitions from the chair role, his commitment to discovery and advancement in anesthesiology continues. The department looks forward to his ongoing contributions in research and remains deeply grateful for the foundation he helped build—one defined by excellence, collaboration, and community.
