January’s Senior Resident Presentations unfolded across two weeks, with four residents sharing timely, practice-shaping topics that reflected both clinical rigor and forward-looking thinking in anesthesiology.
The first session featured Tracy Lian, MD, who opened with “Stranger Danger: Recurarization.” Her presentation examined the risks and clinical implications of residual neuromuscular blockade, emphasizing the importance of vigilance, monitoring, and thoughtful pharmacologic management to ensure patient safety beyond the end of surgery.
She was followed by Joshua Metcalf, MD, who presented “Coronary Artery Calcium: What Anesthesiologists Need to Know (Risks Beyond METs and Stress Tests).” Dr. Metcalf explored how coronary artery calcium scoring can provide valuable insight into perioperative cardiac risk, encouraging anesthesiologists to look beyond traditional functional assessments when evaluating patients.
The second session continued the series with Dennis Berry-Reiser, MD, presenting “An Update on Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders.” His talk reviewed current understanding, emerging research, and ongoing challenges related to neurocognitive changes surrounding surgery, highlighting perioperative brain health as an increasingly important component of patient-centered care.
Closing the month, Madison Crosby, MD, presented “PEEP: An Update to the Standard.” Dr. Crosby offered a thoughtful review of evolving evidence surrounding positive end-expiratory pressure, focusing on how individualized ventilatory strategies can optimize oxygenation while minimizing lung injury.
Together, these presentations showcased the breadth of anesthesiology—from neuromuscular recovery and cardiac risk assessment to cognitive outcomes and ventilatory management. Across both sessions, the talks reflected a shared commitment to evidence-based practice, patient safety, and continuous improvement.
We congratulate Drs. Lian, Metcalf, Berry-Reiser, and Crosby on their excellent presentations and thank them for contributing to a strong start to the year of senior resident scholarship!
