A Message from the Chair: Grace Lim, MD, MSc, MBA

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine at University of Utah Health.

From my first days here, what has stood out most is the extraordinary combination of people, purpose, and possibility. This department brings together talented clinicians, educators, scientists, and staff who share a deep commitment to advancing patient care and improving health for the communities we serve. I am honored to join this community and to build on the strong legacy established by the leaders who have shaped this department over many years.

A Unique Opportunity in the Mountain West

Our department is uniquely positioned within one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions. University of Utah Health serves communities across the Salt Lake Valley and throughout the Mountain West, caring for complex patients while expanding access to high-quality care across a vast geographic area. This regional reach gives us a powerful opportunity—and responsibility—to shape the future of perioperative health for the communities we serve.

At the same time, the University of Utah offers an extraordinary environment for discovery and collaboration. Our proximity to world-class expertise in areas such as bioengineering, data science, population health, and policy allows us to approach challenges in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine through truly interdisciplinary innovation.

Our Aspiration

Our aspiration is clear: to be a world leader in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, and pain medicine. We pursue that goal through three interconnected priorities: clinical excellence, innovation and research, and education.

Clinical excellence is the foundation of our work. Our teams deliver high-quality, patient-centered perioperative care across a broad range of surgical and procedural settings.

As we look ahead, we will continue expanding access to care across the health system while advancing quality, safety, and perioperative medicine services that improve patient outcomes.

Innovation and research drive discovery and scalable solutions. Our faculty are advancing new knowledge in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine while collaborating across disciplines to explore emerging areas such as digital health, artificial intelligence, and bioengineering.

Education sustains our future. Through nationally recognized training programs and strong mentorship, we are preparing the next generation of anesthesiologists, scientists, and leaders who will shape the future of our field.

Our People

Ultimately, the strength of this department lies in its people. The talent, curiosity, and dedication of our faculty, trainees, and staff create an environment where teams thrive and new ideas take shape. Supporting their growth and fostering a collaborative culture will remain central to everything we do.

The combination of people, purpose, and possibility that defines this department creates an extraordinary platform for the future. Together, we will expand access to care across the Mountain West while advancing discovery, innovation, and education that shape anesthesiology for decades to come.

Sincerely,

Grace Lim, MD, MSc, MBA
