Department Conference & Collaboration Highlights: Pain Medicine, TIVA, Health Innovation, and Perioperative Leadership

Part of our ongoing Department Conference & Collaboration Highlights series, spotlighting how faculty and trainees from the University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, & Pain Medicine share research, education, and expertise across the country and around the world.

Our faculty have been busy representing the University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine at conferences and events near and far. Here's a look at what our team has been up to:

Pain Medicine Takes Center Stage at AAPM The Pain Medicine division was well represented at the American Academy of Pain Medicine conference (#PainConnect2026), hosted right here in Salt Lake City. Drs. Sindt, Fine, Jackman, Abdullah, Hagn, and Brogan each delivered podium presentations, and our faculty also mentored three fellow and resident posters — a fantastic showing for our division!

Spreading the Gospel of TIVA at MD Anderson Dr. Egan traveled to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to continue sharing his expertise in Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA), furthering our department's commitment to advancing anesthesiology education and practice at institutions across the country.

Health Innovation Spotlight at the CMI Health Innovation Spotlight at the CMI Drs. Derek Sakata and Lara Brewer were selected among a handful of innovators on campus invited to present their innovative projects at the University of Utah's Center for Medical Innovation (CMI). Their presentations were part of the Health Innovation Partnerships Workshop, co-hosted by the School of Medicine and College of Engineering on March 26, 2026, at the James Levoy Sorenson Center for Medical Innovation. The event featured 30 three-minute talks from faculty interested in building collaborations across medicine and engineering.

Perioperative Leadership at the AACD Summit Drs. Harriet Hopf and Emilee Borgmeier represented our department at the American Association of Clinical Directors (AACD) Summit. Dr. Borgmeier presented "Lessons Learned from a Perioperative Medicine Fellowship," while Dr. Hopf shared her talk, "Innovation and a Growth Mindset: Leading in a Changing World." The two are pictured with Matthew Sherrer of UAB, who led the conference.

We are incredibly proud of the impact our faculty continue to make across the field. Stay tuned for more highlights as our team continues to present, collaborate, and lead!
