May Senior Resident Presentations Challenge Anesthetic Dogma and Provide Insight on Reading Processed EEGs
Last month, our final pair of senior residents delivered their Senior Resident Presentations as part of their final year of resident scholarship. Both residents demonstrated thorough preparation and deep knowledge of their chosen topics.
Ankita Mittal, MBBS, MD opened the morning by presenting a practical guide on processed EEG. Her presentation included descriptions of different types of brain waves, rationale for monitoring EEG in anesthesia, a step-by-step guide to reading SedLine processed EEG monitors, and clinical examples of readouts.
Dr. Mittal was followed by Jacob Nyfeler, MD, whose presentation examined long-held anesthetic beliefs against the lens of modern practice — with the goal of improving patient care. Dr. Nyfeler addressed the origins of myths such as ipsilateral arm restrictions after mastectomy, ketamine use in elevated intracranial pressure (ICP), not administering platelets through fluid warmers, delirium caused by preoperative midazolam, and etomidate’s adrenal suppressive qualities and their impact on clinical outcomes.
