Dr. Michael Andreae Named Director of the Academy of Health Science Educators
We’re proud to share that Michael Andreae, MD, PhD, Research Professor of Anesthesiology in our Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering, has been appointed the next Director of the Academy of Health Science Educators (AHSE)!
Dr. Andreae completed his MD at the University of Bonn, Germany, followed by residency and fellowship training in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at UCSF, Robert Wood Johnson, and Columbia University. He went on to complete postgraduate master’s programs at Imperial College London and Columbia University, an executive MBA at Penn State, and earned his PhD in Freiburg, Germany.
Dr. Andreae was inducted as a Fellow of the AHSE in 2024 and has served as Chair of the Education Symposium Committee, organizing the 2025 and 2026 AHRQ Annual Symposium.
Throughout his career, Dr. Andreae has brought together clinical medicine, Bayesian statistics, bioethics, pharmacodynamic modeling, health care disparities research, simulation science, and implementation science. He has served as Senior Editor for the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, is a member of the Simulation Assessment Research Group at Vanderbilt — a federally funded medical simulation research consortium — and serves as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. He mentors faculty, residents, and students across six institutions and multiple professions, including obstetrics, pharmacy, and nursing, as a Senior VPCATS and UHELM mentor. His current scholarly work spans implementation science, human-AI cooperation under uncertainty, and research ethics. “In the age of AI, we as clinician educators have to lean in on the uniquely human skills — judgment under uncertainty, communication across differences, interprofessional teamwork.”
Under his directorship, the Academy will build on the outstanding foundation laid by Drs. Wendy Hobson-Rohrer and Rebecca Wilson, who founded and developed the AHSE as a community of interprofessional health sciences educators dedicated to advancing pedagogy and the teaching of human durable skills in health care.

We also want to recognize Rebecca Wilson, PhD, RN, for her leadership as Director of the Academy since 2018. Under Dr. Wilson’s guidance, the AHSE strengthened its mission to recognize and develop outstanding health science educators while expanding opportunities for faculty engagement, scholarly collaboration, and professional growth — inducting 79 Fellows since 2018. Dr. Wilson will retire in August 2026 after a career dedicated to advancing health professions education, faculty development, and educational scholarship.
