CentrifugeCCTS Clinical Services research nursing unit is dedicated to providing an optimal setting for expert clinical research. We aim to provide necessary resources for our investigators, including the following:

  • Dedicated research beds, exam rooms and clinic space
  • Clinical lab for immediate specimen processing, including:
    • Two refrigerated centrifuges
    • One non-refrigerated centrifuge
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • One -80 freezer for immediate deep freeze; the freezer is alarmed by a central alarm that notifies institutional engineering, CTSA lab director, and CSC unit management if temperature falls out of range. Institutional engineering responds immediately to ensure that research specimen integrity is protected.
  • Equipment required to support a fully functioning GI suite
  • Equipment for proper disposal of hazardous materials, including chemotherapy
  • Omnicell and Suremed for secure storage and proper material charges for supplies
  • Alaris infusion and syringe pumps
  • Use of a heat box for retrograde IV sampling
  • Certified stadiometer
  • Certified scale
  • Phlebotomy chair for therapeutic phlebotomy
  • Certified blood pressure machines and cardiac monitors
  • Exogen TA thermometers
  • Oxygen, air, and suction wall units in each patient room
  • 11 inpatient beds in rooms equipped as standard hospital inpatient rooms, including nurse call lights, repositionable air beds with scales and alarms, private bathrooms, and the like
  • Crash cart, checked each shift; cart stocked and maintained by University of Utah Hospital to align with all institutional requirements for patient safety; University Hospital code team response
  • Two portable computer workstations
  • DEXA Scan
  • Infant plethysmography (PEA POD)Use of a “Pea pod” for infant body composition analysis
  • Three YSI machines for immediate blood glucose testing, essential resource for IVGTTs, OGTTs and Insulin clamp studies; calibrated each shift
  • Indirect calorimetry
