Nursing Essential Functions

CCTS Clinical Services provides a renowned clinical research facility located physically within the world class University of Utah Hospital.

Resources provided include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Clinical measurements per protocol
    • Vital signs (namely simple, serial, orthostatic, protocol specific)
    • Height/weight
    • Daily I/Os
  • Venous access
    • Venipuncture, therapeutic phlebotomy, IV placement as needed for serial sampling
    • U/S assist, retrograde IV access
    • Central line access and patient education
  • Specimen/Sample collections (any body fluids)
    • Serial blood draws/ Pharmacokinetic sampling (PKs)
    • Urine collection
    • 24 hour urines, with aliquot sampling
  • Specimen processing
    • Simple spin and separate
  • Protocol specific procedures
    • Skin biopsies
    • Assist with muscle/kidney/liver/fat biopsies
    • Moderate sedation using propofol, versed, fentanyl
    • Assist with endoscopic procedures
    • Prep and recovery for sedated procedures
    • OGTT studies
    • IVGTT studies
    • Insulin clamp studies
    • CCTS YSI testing for immediate blood sugar values
    • Pediatric neurocognitive assessment
    • Telemetry
    • EKG monitoring at the bedside
    • Calorimetry
    • Research nursing during exercise studies
    • Research nursing during apheresis/plasma pheresis
  • Medication administration
    • Medication infusions, injections, PO, and the like
    • Study medication Rx dispensing for at home use
    • Medication reconciliation documentation
