The Biomedical Informatics Teaching Development Digital Badge is a formal recognition for DBMI PhD-track students and postdoctoral scholars who wish to strengthen, document, and display their teaching expertise. This badge supports trainees in developing the skills needed to teach computational and data-driven subjects effectively—whether in academia, industry, or professional training environments.
To earn the badge, participants must serve as a teaching assistant for three courses, with the option to count one workshop toward this requirement. Throughout their teaching experiences, trainees engage in structured professional development focused on evidence-based teaching strategies, articulating core beliefs about teaching and learning, creating inclusive and supportive learning environments, and assessing student learning in computational and informatics contexts. Participants will also complete a teaching philosophy statement that synthesizes their learning and reflects on their teaching practices.
As part of the process, students select a faculty mentor who provides individualized guidance and feedback on teaching materials, reflections, and the teaching philosophy statement. Trainees also complete a series of written reflections on their teaching experiences, challenges, and growth as instructors.
Upon completion of all requirements, students receive a digital badge issued through Credly, which can be shared on professional platforms such as LinkedIn to publicly document their teaching development and instructional experience. This badge demonstrates a commitment to high-quality teaching in biomedical informatics and highlights key pedagogical competencies valued across academic and professional settings.
PhD students and postdoctoral trainees in DBMI are eligible.
