Eligibility & Submissions Procedures

Student Paper Competition

Students are invited to submit papers expressing original ideas and reasonably complete research or development efforts in the areas of health informatics or telemedicine, broadly defined as the application of computer, communication, or information technology to health care.

The Award was established in memory of Bruce A. Houtchens, M.D. Dr. Houtchens was a surgeon, physicist, mathematician, aeronautical and astronautical engineer, and a fine human being. His main interests included trauma surgery/critical care, space medicine, and clinical applications of telemedicine and medical informatics. It is hoped that this Award will stimulate gifted students to open new horizons of medical technology, and seek better ways of integrating medical technology into medical education and clinical practice.

University of Utah graduate students are eligible to participate in this competition. The student's academic advisor needs to certify that the work described in the paper is substantially the work of the student while in training at the University of Utah. Papers with awarded prizes from other competitions are ineligible.

Topic Areas

Any topic or issue dealing within the broad field of medical and nursing informatics and telemedicine. This includes, but is not limited to, entries from fields in computer science, biomedical engineering, and health care technology.

Submission Deadline

March 1, 2014

The manuscripts are evaluated blind; i.e., without the author's name and affiliation. The reviewers score for originality and innovativeness, analysis of relevant prior work, importance of the contribution to medical informatics and clinical care, and the organization and clarity of the manuscript. The decision of the judges will be final.

The winner will receive a prize of $2,000 and The Bruce A. Houtchens, M.D. Award in Medical Informatics and Telemedicine during the annual awards seminar.
