Poor usability is a major concern with contemporary HIT products, especially EHRs. Usability impacts can include critical errors, productivity losses, and low adoption/usage rates. This presentation outlines where and why usability issues are prevalent in Health IT products. Rich examples are provided to illustrate the most vexing areas in EHRs. Potential solutions are offered including the implementation of a Usability Maturity Model in healthcare organizations.
Dr. Nancy Staggers has an extensive clinical informatics background in both operational IT and academe. She has held executive health IT positions for enterprise EHR projects. Nancy was the Director of Nursing Informatics at the University of Utah in the past. Her current research focuses on EHR usability, specifically patient care handoffs and the cognitive support necessary for these crucial processes.
