Melanoma Fellowship

This paid full-time one-year fellowship is designed to engage the trainee in clinical and translational research in melanoma, working with Doug Grossman, MD, PhD and his colleagues in the Department of Dermatology and the Melanoma Center at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The fellow will work closely with Dr. Grossman and colleagues, including population scientists, medical oncologists and surgical oncologists to enroll and coordinate subjects in melanoma trials and assist with epidemiology projects utilizing our melanoma patient database and other ongoing projects. Candidates with basic science experience will also have the opportunity to work on a variety of lab-based projects. Three weeks of vacation and opportunity to attend a national meeting included.

Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) in Salt Lake City, Utah

Eligibility

Medical student (3rd or 4th year), or MD graduate with a gap year who are pre- or post-internship or residency.

Timeline

12 months (July 2024-June 2025).  This fellowship begins July 1.

Expectations

The fellow is expected to :

1. Work closely with dermatologists, surgeons, and oncologists in the HCI Melanoma Center to complete clinical research projects. 

2. Attend weekly meetings with the primary mentors (Drs. Grossman and Holmen).

3. Act as a sub-investigator on current clinical projects of faculty in the HCI Melanoma Center. 

4. Attend weekly Melanoma Patient Treatment Planning Conference. 

5. Complete CITI training and other training to facilitate human subject research projects.

6. Optional: Attend Dermatology Grand Rounds, journal club, research-in-progress lectures held on Fridays).

Assessment/Evaluation

It is important to obtain and to respond to formal and informal feedback on a frequent basis. Weekly meetings with the mentor are advised, to ensure close oversight of progress. The fellow is responsible for arranging regular meetings to determine and achieve milestones. The mentors will assist with data collection, validation, data analysis and interpretation, and poster and manuscript preparation. It is the role of the mentee to ask for help if resources, support or additional direction are needed.

This fellowship is not affiliated with our Dermatology residency program and does not guarantee an interview or position in the residency.

Salary Support

A salary stipend along with basic health insurance is provided.
