Brief Description of Clinical Course

The Family Medicine Leadership Program is a longitudinal elective that aims to:
  1. Shape interested students into family medicine leaders, competent in health systems literacy* and collaboration.**
  2. Prepare students to excel in family medicine careers.
  3. Promote scholarly pursuits by both students and faculty on topics in family medicine.

* Health systems literacy: health policy and PCMH elements
** Collaboration: patient-centered care, community resources, inter-professional relationships, & team work

Prerequisites:

Completion of the following third year clerkships:
  • Family medicine
  • Internal medicine
  • Pediatrics

Clinical Course Goals

As a result of completing the Family Medicine Leadership Program students will be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate health topics to the lay public in writing
  2. Effectively communicate health topics to the lay public in audio-visual media
  3. Advocate for a health cause to the Utah State Legislature
  4. Understand avenues for access to health care services in the US 
  5. Practice principles of the patient-centered medical home

Timeline

This is a longitudinal course. Schedule for achieving requirements for the elective will vary for each student.
