Representatives from the University of Utah Physician Assistant Program (UPAP) participated in the MEDiversity Week conferences, which took place November 2-6. The mission of MEDiversity Week is to highlight the equity, diversity, and inclusion work within U Health while addressing health care disparities and offering solutions for the training of current and future providers.
In the UPAP segment of the week’s activities, Grant Sunada, MPH, PhD, BA joined UPAP Director Jared Spackman, MPAS, PA-C and Kilo Zamora, MSW to present the unique approach UPAP takes to pursue its mission to serve the medically underserved. The segment described the national and historical context, along with the structural support, for equity and inclusion. The presenters also walked MEDiversity participants through the longitudinal course where equity and inclusion is explicitly taught and engaged participants in exercises used in the curricula to increase awareness and appreciation of diverse viewpoints.
“This session allowed us to show how the mission-driven support for equity and diversity at UPAP allowed us to proactively engage with and support students following the video-recorded police killing of George Floyd,” said Sunada. Spackman added, “It was very encouraging to see U health take on the task of highlighting and encouraging this work amongst health science programs, and while attendance was limited due to the online format and demands that pandemic has placed upon many, lots of important initiatives start in small and modest ways.”
