Charles R. Rogers, PhD, MPH, MS, MCHES® of the Division of Public Health was recently informed that his grant proposal, “iBeat CRC: A Community-based Intervention to Increase Early-onset Colorectal Cancer Awareness using a Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Approach” was approved for funding under the V Foundation’s 2020 V Scholar Program. The $200,000 grant supports young tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research careers.
Funding for Dr. Rogers’s award came from the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, created in memoriam of the well-known ESPN sportscaster. The fund supports V Scholars from communities that are underrepresented in cancer research.
In addition to the grant award, Dr. Rogers was also named the 2020-21 awardee of the Inclusive Excellence in Research Award. The award is given out by the U’s Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion office and recognizes individuals who exemplify leadership and contributions of inclusion, equity, and diversity.
“Your innovative approach to colon cancer research and reducing health disparities through your #cuttingcrc initiative will undoubtedly transform the lives and health of many, in addition to bringing awareness of this crucial issue,” reads the announcement letter by Jose Rodriguez, MD, FAAFP, Associate Vice President of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The award was presented to Dr. Rogers in a special Zoom ceremony on Friday, November 6.
