Exploring South Korea (PBHLT 6531-301) is an elective course for MPH students from both Salt Lake and South Korean campuses. Students will have an immersive experience as they explore different aspects of public health, including working with NGOs, active transportation, water sanitation and management, and more.
Class will be from 5/13 - 6/3/23, with the option of adding capstone (PBHLT 6900-301) from 5/2-5/13/23. This class does not count as a learning abroad for the global health track.

Exploring Public Health in South Korea – 2023

- May 18th-20th – Arrive University of Utah Asia Campus
- May 19th-21st- Lotus Lantern Festival (Buddha’s Birthday May 27th)
- May 22nd – Classes start: Introductions, meet with NGO partner (South of Seoul) and visit Songdo (Built Environment)
- May 23rd – Food: Food safety and handling, and food exploration
- May 24th – Water treatment facility and Songdo
- May 25th – Seoul/Incheon: City hall - Identify Public Health offices and services. Visit the Palace and history Museum. Identify traditional and contemporary components of the socio-cultural fabric. Explore the traditional markets for traditional medicine.
- May 26th – Seoul/Ansan multicultural district/NGO
- May 27th – Built environment – Songdo
- May 29th – Meeting with Green Climate Fund (GCF) and United Nations Office Sustainable Development (UNOSD)
- May 30th – Hike: Bukhansan National Park
- May 31st – Soraepogo: Fish market
- June 1st – Bicycle ride along Ara Waterway
- June 2nd – Wrap up and group presentation

Process
- Let Jacklyn Chiu (jacklyn.chiu@utah.edu) know that you are interested in Block 6.
- Pay the $500 deposit by 3/1/2023.
- Confirm that your passport is valid for at least 6 months past your planned stay in Korea; if it expires or is expired, make an appoint ASAP to renew.
- After you pay the $500, deposit, you'll send Kyra Solis (kyra.solis@utah.edu) your visa info

- Once we get your visa info, you'll receive a Certificate of Admissions for the UAC and can get your Korean visa. For visa questions, work with Kyra.

Budget
Housing
Students must book and pay for own housing. Options include the UAC dorms, or independent of campus.
Applying for Housing: Students must apply and pay for housing on their own.
For MPH graduate students, you will not apply to IGC directly. They will release the housing application in December. Please email Incheon Global Campus Housing Office for more information if needed.
