Central Administration Research Office (CARO)

CARO is a resource available to DFPM faculty and postdoctoral researchers to develop research proposals and navigate the grant cycle from conceptualization to submission to award acceptance. CARO research development and pre-award staff work closely with investigators to facilitate the submission of competitive grant proposals to the university’s Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) by the OSP deadline (five business days prior to sponsor deadline). OSP reviews proposals for compliance and ultimately submits to the sponsor. In case of an award, CARO ensures a successful transition from pre- to post-award management. Staff with combined pre- and post-award responsibilities have dual reporting lines to the research director and the finance & accounting director. Biostatistics Core (BSC)

The Biostatistics Core (Dr. Marlene Egger, Interim Director) offers biostatistical support throughout the grant lifecycle, including stages of concept development, data management, project implementation, and manuscript preparation. The BSC provides consultation and service in study design, biostatistical computing, data analysis, and the creation of a data management plan. Health Studies Fund (HSF)

The mission of the Health Studies Fund (HSF) is to support research conducted by DFPM faculty and postdoctoral fellows in the context of their career development, to promote effective research teams in DFPM, and to leverage extramural funding. HSF awards are inclusive of the following:

  • Research Pilot Award
  • Mentored New Researcher Award
  • Scholarship Award
  • Open Access publication fees
  • F. Marian Bishop Award 

Research Mentoring

DFPM's mentoring program is directed by Mia Hashibe, PhD, and tailored to the needs of Early Stage Investigators (ESI) looking to develop a productive research career. The research mentoring program consists of the following steps: 1) Be formally matched with a department mentor, 2) Arrange annual team mentor meetings, 3) Receive peer mentoring, 4) Receive mentor training, 5) Receive research professional development, and 6) Connect with research resources across the university. Mentees are asked to use mentoring tools, such as Individual Development Plans, Grant Writing Self-Confidence Self-Assessment, Mentor Mapping, etc.

Research and Scholarship Committee

The mission of the Research and Scholarship Committee is to advance the strategic research plan of the department. The committee meets monthly; membership is open to all DFPM research faculty. New Proposal Working Group (NPWG)

The New Proposal Working Group (NPWG) is a forum for faculty to workshop different aspects of grant writing, including a specific aims page and discussion of summary statements and how to revise grants for future funding success. NPWG is attended by investigators across all four divisions. On weeks when no faculty present at NPWG, grantsmanship workshops are held. 

Utah Women's Health Review

The Utah Women's Health Review (UWHR) is a collaboration between the University of Utah Center of Excellence in Women’s Health and Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library. Although not produced by DFPM, Dr. Karen Schliep (faculty in Public Health) is the Editor-in-Chief, while other DFPM faculty serve on the editorial board and are contributors to the research published in UWHR.
